Developing Applications with ArcGIS Server Using the Microsoft .NET Framework

This course introduces the ArcGIS Web Application Developer Framework (ADF) for the Microsoft .NET framework and teaches how to develop custom ArcGIS Server Web applications. You learn how to use GIS Web controls and work with data sources and graphics application programming interfaces (APIs). Standard guidelines for developing Web ADF applications are presented.

Note: This course does not cover developing Web applications using the ArcGIS API for JavaScript.

This course is designed for experienced Visual Studio VB.NET or C# programmers who have Internet development experience using the Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0.

Those completing this course will be able to:

• Understand the components of the ArcGIS Server Web ADF.
• Develop custom applications using the Web ADF.
• Utilize the ASP.NET AJAX framework within the Web ADF.
• Develop custom commands and tools.
• Build and deploy custom tasks.

• Building Web ADF applications: Web ADF components; Web ADF controls; Web Mapping Application template organization.
• Using the Web ADF controls: ResourceManager controls; Mapping controls; ImageBlending options; Tiling schemes.
• Programming the Web ADF: Using data sources, resources, and functionalities; Common data source API.
• Working with custom commands and tools: Extending the Web ADF toolbar; Client and server actions; Web ADF JavaScript library.
• Working with ASP.NET and AJAX: Working with asynchronous requests; ScriptManager and UpdatePanel controls; Implementing ASP.NET AJAX partial postbacks; Using Web ADF controls and callback results.
• Programming Web ADF graphics on the server: Element and feature graphics layers; Geometry; Renderers and symbols; Refreshing graphics layers.
• Programming Web ADF graphics on the client: Client-tier Web ADF JavaScript graphics; Creating graphic features; Managing graphic features in the map; Using layer definitions.
• Programming ArcGIS Server APIs: Using the ArcGIS Server SOAP API; Working with ArcGIS Server SOAP API types; Converting between Web ADF and SOAP; Definition expressions.
• Programming ArcGIS Server APIs: Working with ArcObjects on the server; Internet and local resources; Converting between COM and SOAP; Making stateful changes.
• Working with the Web ADF task framework: Task controls included with the Web ADF; Working with out-of-the-box tasks; Using the TaskResults control to display results.
• Building custom Web tasks: Working with user control tasks; Creating custom Server control tasks; Extending Web ADF tasks.

Completion of Introduction to ArcGIS Server or equivalent knowledge is required. You should also have experience programming with ASP.NET 2.0 and JavaScript. Familiarity with Internet protocols and Web services is recommended. Knowledge of ArcObjects will be useful but is not essential.
