The Department of Geography and Geoinformation supports interdisciplinary innovation in geography, GIS, and regional science through faculty research and degree programs. Students who have received the Department's diploma in Geography have gone on to spatial analysis work within the fields of research, science, public administration, space planning, natural resources management and environmental protection, and business. In 1988, the Department founded the Center for Geographical Data Processing Salzburg (ZGIS) as a clearinghouse for international outreach, education, and information exchange about GIS.

The Department has contributed the papers from the 1998 Earth Observation & Geo-Spatial Web and Internet Workshop (EOGEO).
